Breaking News:

Fondation EurActiv

It was set-up to embody and diffuse the non-commercial principles of EurActiv. It has appointed an experienced Secretary General and gathered an impressive Advisory Council with members stretching from the business community to NGO's, think tanks and the media.

Objectives

Fondation EurActiv provides EurActiv.com with guidance on editorial strategy and media independence. Over time it is widening its scope to include coaching on policy information and helping non Brussels-based on-line media to get a foothold in EU circles.

Fondation EurActiv is a Belgian foundation set up in January 2004. The activities of Fondation EurActiv include:

  • Research: identifying sources of information and intelligence on European Union policies and their impact on European Actors;
  • Advice: assisting European media and their content partners to access and then diffuse information;
  • Logistical support to partners: the CrossLingual Brussels Network Office at the International Press Center is helping the 9 media in 9 languages that are based outside Belgium (EN/FR/DE + 7 across Europe);
  • Training: providing speakers and moderators for conferences as well as policy training for journalists and young professionals.

Communication Policy

Yellow Paper and speaking on EU communication policy

Fondation EurActiv, unlike EurActiv.com in its normal editorial work, does express its views, on topics related to the base line 'Efficacité et transparence des acteurs européens'. With input from its Advisory Council and various experts, it published and updated several times its Yellow Paper on EU communication, answering the documents published by Commissioner Wallström.

Several persons often provide TV interviews, speeches or conference moderations on EU communication policy, such as Christophe Leclercq, Julian Oliver, Frédéric Simon, Georgi Gotev, Jean-Charles de Cordes and Rick Zednik.

EU Projects

Based on this, on the EurActiv network, and on EU Projects Fondation EurActiv often cooperates with relevant NGOs and media, both at national and EU level. In Brussels, these includes Friends of Europe, ECAS, and in 2007 the European Movement International under a 'Plan D' project called Speak up Europe. Fondation EurActiv does get modest EU funding for some of these projects, and welcomes enquiries from potential project partners.

Structure

Julian Oliver is the Secretary General of the Fondation. Julian, who has worked for ICI and American Express among others, is a former chair of AmCham EU as well as a former board member of the European Foundation Centre. Julian Oliver is well known in Brussels as a moderator and presenter on EU Affairs.

Advisory Council

FondationEurActiv is guided by an Advisory Council and an Orientation Committee. The names of the distinguished persons who have agreed to serve on this body are shown below. FondationEurActiv became operational following the publication of its statutes in the 'Moniteur Belge' in January 2004 as one of the first foundations under a new Belgian law.
