PRESS RELEASE Brussels, 26 January 2006

The White Paper on Communicating the EU: make, break - or more mumble?

Ever since the start of the Barroso Commission in late 2004 the EU executive has promised to deliver a new and better communication strategy.

On 1 February the EU’s chief communicator Commissioner Margot Wallström will launch the long awaited White Paper. We think this deserves special attention, and EurActiv therefore calls your attention to our Special Week of coverage on ‘Communicating the EU’.

‘Communicating the EU’ will run from 27 January to 3 February 2006, and will cover a number of items:

  • Interviews with the front line Commission staffers such as head of the UK representation Reijo Kemppinen on the challenges of getting the message across in the ‘hard’ and ‘not so hard’ EU countries.
  • A critical assessment of how the EU institutions use the internet to communicate
  • Assessing past and present EU communication strategies EU information efforts – examples of successes and failures
  • The NGO experience: a German and an Irish perspective
  • The White Paper and Yellow Paper – the latter being EurActiv’s complementary Plan D. This working paper will argue the need to Diversify, Decentralise, Disseminate, Decide

EurActiv will be available for comment:
