Islam, Christianism: what 'dialogue' signifies

Published: Thursday 22 February 2007

In this Working Paper from the 25 October 2006 meeting of the Thomas More Institute's French Committee, speakers Rémi Brague and Jean-François Colosimo, with 'counterpoint' provided by Sophie Missana, examine the process of 'dechristianization' which has become prevalent in European countries.

With Christian churches increasingly empty or closed, priests aging and less frequently replaced, what can be learned from the arrival, thanks to the strong (and encouraged) migratory phenomenon that has taken place during the past 50 years, of largely Moslem men and women, and can 'dialogue' between 'Christian'/Christian heritage companies, and Moslem individuals or groups, be succesful?

According to Remi Brague: "The first difficulty is to identify the 'actors' in such a dialogue. Between Islam and Christianity, one must from the beginning understand the three significances of the word 'Islam': a religion, the a civilization and the populations labelled with the civilization in question. And we must make these distinctions clear, before dialogue can proceed."
