Talking to EU's citizens[fr

Published: Tuesday 20 March 2007    | Updated: Friday 23 March 2007

Published in March 2007, internet magazine 'Regards Croisés - Europe at the centre of intellectual debate' asks whether Europe can afford not to use its various languages to communicate with citizens.

Anticipating the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, 13 student-volunteers of 11 nationalities undertook an investigation into an issue on which no consensus has yet been reached: European languages. They confined their study to eight linguistic areas: UK-Ireland, France, Germany-Austria, Spain, Sweden, Poland, Slovenia and Ukraine.

ARTE France President Jérôme Clément also spoke on the issue at the Collčge d'Europe in Bruges on 21 March.
