FIFA is determined to convince the European Commission that imposing the controversial '6+5' rule on football teams does not breach EU law and will benefit the sport by restoring some level of national identity to clubs, combating the over-concentration of wealth in top clubs and guaranteeing equal opportunities to compete in the sector, FIFA's chief of international relations told EurActiv in an interview.
Despite the hurdles still facing the EU's Lisbon Treaty, European sports movements firmly believe that a future EU competence on sport - as planned in the text - will come into effect in one form or another and are thus continuing their work to encourage EU-level exchange of best practices.
Already accepted as a tool for social integration, sport is also seen as a means of promoting intercultural understanding in an increasingly diverse Europe. (read more)
