The Council sets the negotiations date for the second wave
At its first meeting under the Portuguese EU Council Presidency on 24 January in Brussels, the EU Council approved the EU positions in view of the opening at Ministerial level of the Intergovernmental Conferences for the opening of accession negotiations with Malta, Romania, Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania and Bulgaria on 15 February 2000.
