Le premier ministre polonais Marek Belka s’est prononcé en faveur d’une ratification de la Constitution européenne par la voie parlementaire. Les autorités luxembourgeoises ont quant à elles décidé de maintenir le référendum fixé au 10 juillet prochain.
In light of the vexed process of the EU Constitution’s ratification to date, it would be « in Poland’s best interest » to let the Sejm (parliament) ratify the document as soon as possible rather than submitting the issue to popular vote, Prime Minister Marek Belka said on 20 June. He said that if the country opted for a referendum, which has been planned by the government for 9 October (ie at the same time as the presidential elections), « it will be tough to get people out to vote knowing that most countries are delaying their referendums ».
Nevertheless, he said that « I still believe that ratification of the constitutional treaty by Poland is in the best interests of our country ».
Meanwhile, parliamentary leaders in Luxembourg decided to go ahead with a referendum on the EU Constitution as planned on 10 July. Polls show a growing support for the No camp. Prime Minister Jean Claude Juncker has said that he would quit if he lost the vote.
