Prodi and Verhofstadt play down rift

In a presentation of the conclusions of the Ghent European Council to the European Parliament, Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt and Commission President Romano Prodi took the opportunity to stress their good relations. Mr Verhofstadt said that the two would be appearing together at the next press conference. Mr Prodi chose to emphasise the unity that existed between the Presidency of the Council and the Commission.
