EU to ban Chinese food after infection by deadly antibiotic
The EU Standing Veterinary Committee voted in favour of a Commission proposal to suspend imports into the EU of Chinese products of animal origin, after the discovery of a potentially deadly antibiotic used in Asian shrimps. Despite China's protests, EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection David Byrne said the ban was necessary because Chinese food controls could not be trusted.
