Verhofstadt: Enlargement even greater priority after 11 September

The president of the European Council, Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt, said at the conclusion of the Ghent summit that enlargement has become an even greater priority for the EU in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Mr Verhofstadt announced that the EU could nominate candidates for the first wave of enlargement at the December summit at Laeken. However, Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel later said there would be no list.
