While the Doha round seems to be entering into a „hibernation phase“, the Commission has presented a Communication on the EU’s new trade strategy. 

The EU priority is still given to multilateral negotiations but „it is at the bilateral level that the Commission sees a potential to obtain direct and long-lasting results. Will not this emphasis put on bilateralism be at the expense of the Doha round objective: improve the link between trade and development? What about market regulation at the global level: are not there some sectors where common rules are negotiable? What about social and environmental norms?“
