The Commission announced on 7 February that the spam enforcement
authorities of thirteen EU member states will work together to
combat the problem of unsolicited e-mails. The member states
which signed the voluntary agreement to share information and
pursue complaints across borders are: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus,
Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania,
Malta, the Netherlands and Spain.
Information Society Commissioner Viviane Reding called upon
other member states to join the agreement.
Spam (e-mail messages which are sent to multiple recipients who
have not requested the e-mail) has become a major problem for the
internet. According to some studies, three-quarters of e-mails sent
around the world in 2004 were spam.
