US objects to EU solution on VAT and e-commerce

The US Treasury stated the EU proposal on VAT and e-commerce, which the ECOFIN Council is expected to adopt on 12 February, may contravene OECD agreements. The Treasury believes that it may also be potentially inconsistent with international trade (World Trade Organisation) obligations, in particular the commitment to accord national treatment to foreign goods and services.
