The column’s comments:
- With the exception of Romania, Bulgaria and the Baltic States, the year 2005 began rather badly for sales of new cars, particularly in Poland, where retail sales have also been showing signs of weakness for a few months.
- The growth in exports surpasses that of imports in the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia and Poland. Over the first quarter, Franco-CEEC trade balances out.
- During April, the Czech, Slovak, Hungarian and Polish currencies depreciated against the Euro, between 1.2% (Koruna) and 3.5% (Zloty), after months of appreciation. The Slovenian tolar and the Romanian leu remained unchanged.
